Leland B. Cross Jr., 70, was law partner, active civic leader
Memorial services for Leland B. Cross Jr., 70, Indianapolis, a retired attorney and civic leader, will be at 5 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Indiana Repertory Theatre, with a celebration of life following services.
He died Feb. 14.
A graduate of Denison University and the University of Michigan Law School, Mr. Cross retired in 1997 as a senior partner in the Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan law firm.
He specialized in representing employers in labor-relation matters and also in entertainment law.
Mr. Cross was past chairman of the board of directors of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and was a life member of the board.
He received the organization's first and only Medallion of Merit and Distinction in 1996 for his contributions to the state and its economy.
He also received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Gov. Evan Bayh and the Indiana Volunteer of the Year award from the Indiana Society of Association Executives in 1991. In 1995, Vincennes University gave him its Pacemaker Award for Public Service and an honorary doctorate.
A scholarship was created in his name in 1997 at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, jointly with Region 25 of the National Labor Relations Board, for achievement by a minority law student.
Mr. Cross was a past member of the United States Chamber of Commerce Labor Relations Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on the National Labor Relations Board.
He was appointed in 2000 to the Indiana Public Employee Labor Relations Board, and he was a member of the Federal Commission on Leave created by the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. He had served as general counsel and director for the Indiana Legal Foundation.
Mr. Cross was a special labor counsel to the prime minister of interior affairs for the government of Romania. He participated in a mission organized by Doctors Without Borders to provide medical supplies to Russia.
He mentored and tutored third-grade boys in Indianapolis Public School 42 and was chairman of the board of the Phoenix Theatre. He also had been a member of the board of directors of the Fine Arts Society.
He was a member and former moderator of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
