Ada Jennie Elmer was born, in Buckland most likely at the home of her grand parents, the VanValkenburgs, she was the oldest of nine children born to Herman Steele & Sadie J. (Clark) Elmer. Ada graduated from Greenfield High School in 1932 and removed to Springfield where she worked as a counter-woman.

She married Wallace James Downhill, of Springfield, 25 June 1938. She moved to Philadelphia, PA and secured an apartment for her and her husband to live in while attending veternairy school. She worked at Horn & Hardart Co., an automat food cafeteria, while her husband attended classes. Ada kept a diary full of life experiences during this time.

Upon completion of his schooling the couple moved to Northampton and set up The Animal Aid Hospital veternairy practice. They continued that work from 1943 to retirement in 1977. Upon retirement the couple moved to California for a short time and then resided in Florida and on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Wallace and Ada had two children.
