Eighth of 11 children born to Richard Anderson and Mary Ann Carmichael. John was named for his brother who had passed away as an infant.

The family lived in Lislea where Richard was a farmer. St. Patrick's Church of Ireland was their home parish in Kilrea. Their records list his DOB as 5 January 1849.

About 1860 the family moved to Ontario, Canada, to join Mary Ann's siblings. There John met and married Orpha Guernsey and settled in Mountain, Dundas County where he worked as a farmer, general agent, and builder before retiring as a butcher.
