William Davis Close, born September 11, 1845 in Havana, Mason County, Illinois to John G. and Mary Francis Mounce Close. He married Janette Francis Oneal on March 6, 1867 in Mason County, Illinois. They had 10 children, Warden, Hardin, Fredrick, Lena, Milriel, Edward, Lulu, Nellie, Minnie, and Ivis. He then married Lillie L. Close in 1898. They had 3 children, Commila, Susan, and Hazel. He died in 1914 in Columbus, Luna county, New Mexico and is buried in Valley Heights Cemetery.Per Henry Aten's History of the 85th Illinois Infantry, published in, 1901:
William D. Close, private, company D, 85th Il. Inf., was born in Mason county, Illinois, September 11, 1845, and enlisted from Bath, Il. Served with his company through all the campaigns in which the regiment was engaged until the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia, September 1, 1864, in which he was twice wounded; was honorably discharged May 16, 1865. He returned to Illinois and engaged in farming until 1868, when he removed to Carroll county, Missouri, where he resided until 1880. He then removed to Washington territory, was justice of the peace, deputy sheriff for eight years, and treasurer of Cowlitz county for one term. He removed to Oklahoma in 1893, and engaged in farming and stock raising; has been justice of the peace, and was elected county treasurer of Woods county at the general election in 1900. He resides at Forest, Woods county, Oklahoma.
this was published in, 1901, and he must have moved to New Mexico sometime after that.
