Pearl I. Bowen
Pearl I. BOWEN, 88, Leiters Ford, mother of Dr. Otis R. BOWEN, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, where she had been a patient for three years.
Her son, who is U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, became a country doctor in Bremen and then served two terms as Governor of Indiana.
Mrs. Bowen was born Oct. 17, 1899 in Tiosa to George and Eleria RUSH WRIGHT. She lived most of her life in Fulton and Lake counties. She was married Dec. 25, 1915 in Rochester to Vernie OWEN, who died July 13, 1983. She was a member of the Leiters Ford United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star.
Mrs. Bowen's parents, George B. and Eleria WRIGHT, were farmers in Richland Township, and her father also was a mail carrier.
Both Mrs. Bowen and her husband grew up in Richland Township and attended the same high school. Vernie Bowen taught school 43 years, was a basketball coach and owned and operated the former Village Hardware in Leiters Ford.
Surviving wih Dr. Bowen are three daughters, Mrs. Lester (Esther) PLAIN, Dyer; Mrs. Evelyn AMACHER, Valparaiso, and Mrs. Leland (Sarah Jane) SCANDLING, South Bend; another son, Richard A. BOWEN, Leiters Ford; sixteen grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Dorsey WRIGHT, South Bend, and nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were a granddaughter, Barbara, in 1985; a sister, and a brother.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Leiters Ford United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday in the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, and for an hour before services at the church. Memorials may be made to the Leiters Ford United Methodist Church.
