Married first to Edith Naylor Johnson (1900-1924).
Second marriage with Mildred Faye Adams of Fenton, Michigan.
---
First Lieutenant John Thad Johnson, born July 19, 1893 in Johnson City, Texas, was the son of R. B. Johnson and Arthusia Ann Barker. His parents married on July 11, 1888 at Burnet, Texas. He received his formal education at the Trinity College in Waxahachi, TX.

Thad was regarded as one of the highest skilled aviators in the Selfridge Field Pursuit Group, and a member of the "Caterpillar Club," that group of flyers who had been forced to save themselves with parachutes.

Thad’s first marriage, Nov. 18, 1919, Frederick, Okla., was with Edith N. Naylor. Shortly afterwards Thad was detailed to Hawaii until just before the 1923 Pulitzer Trophy Races at St. Louis. While in Hawaii, Edith's health was greatly impaired by the tropical climate. In 1923 her health worsened and they returned to the mainland. Edith died near where Thad was stationed.

Now widowed, Thad remarried on Oct. 24, 1925 with Mildred Faye Adams, daughter of Henry Adams and Victoria Scott of Fenton, Michigan.

Thad became one of the foremost aviators in the US air services. Thad received his first aviation training at the O. E. Williams Flying School at Fenton, Michigan. Afterwards Thad served in World War I. According to his service application, at age 23, he was 6-ft tall, medium build, brown hair, brown eyes and resided in Jefferson County, Oklahoma as a student at the Theological School at Trinity University, Waxahachie, Texas.

J. Thad Johnson and Cyrus Bettis both attended the O. E. Williams Flying School at the same time and volunteered into the service, participated with extensive training and became careered military aviators.

July 1927, during the Diamond Jubilee celebration at Ottawa, Thad was pilot of one of the twelve escort planes for Col. Charles Lindbergh during which he was instantly killed.

"Thad" was the tenth name of the twelve men commemorated by the Fenton Chamber of Commerce on Memorial Day, 1929. . . "TO THE STUDENTS OF THE WILLIAMS SCHOOL OF AVIATION AND OTHERS OF OUR YOUNG MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION"

Below is the newspaper account of Thad's first wife:
Waxahachie Daily Light, Waxahachie, TX, Jan. 18, 1924, p.5

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Edith Naylor Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Naylor of Blackwell, Okla. Mrs. Johnson was educated in the public schools of this city. Mr. Naylor, who was connected with the telephone company here, was formerly president of the Waxahachie Rotary club and later secretary of that body. The following account of the funeral is taken from the Blackwell Daily Tribune: A very large number of friends and acquaintances of the family gathered at the Christian church Friday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs. Edith Naylor Johnson, wife of Lieutenant J. Thad Johnson of the U.S. Air Service, and paid tribute to the memory of a splendid young Christian character. The service was in keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Johnson, as expressed before her death, were simple, consisting of the singing of her favorite song and the reading of her favorite text, The floral tribute was beautiful with flowers banked all around the casket

During the service a sketch of Mrs. Johnson’s life, offered by Mrs. H. N. Naylor, her mother, which was read by the pastor as follows:

"Edith May Naylor was born May 5, 1900 at Woodbury, TN. On Nov. 18, 1919, she was united in marriage with Lt J Thad Johnson of the U.S. Air Service, at the home of her parents at Frederick. Okla. Soon after she departed with her husband to Honolulu, where they were stationed for three years and where her health was seriously undermined by the tropical climate. After several months rest during 1921, her health was apparently restored, and for more than a year seemed in her usual health. The climate again tolling upon her, her husband urged her to return to the mainland, but she refused to leave him until in Oct. 1922, she became critically ill and after several weeks in a hospital, she was sent home by her physician, followed in a few weeks by her husband.”
