Mr. Floyd Matthew Meeks, age 94, died on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. Mr. Meeks was born March 27, 1916, in Banks County to the late Matthew Henry and Leila Meeks. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country in World War II. A 1936 graduate of Brooklet High School, he became a committed educator following his 1945 graduation from Georgia Teachers College where he earned a B.S. in Education. His early teaching career took him to Savannah High School, Black Creek Elementary School, the Veteran's farm program in Bryan County, and the Hendrix Elementary School in Dodge County. In the 1950s he returned to college at Mercer University and graduated with a Master's Degree in Education. He then served as the principal of Marlow School in Effingham County for fifteen years and Blythe Elementary School in Richmond County for five years.

Mr. Meeks retired in 1976, moved to Bryan County, and operated a commercial greenhouse before moving to Statesboro in 1989. He was a member of the Georgia Teachers Association, Statesboro First Baptist Church, and the Harmony Sunday School Class. He loved to tell jokes and will be remembered for his sharp mind, incredible memory, and entertaining family and friends as a stand-up comic. Up until two weeks ago, he was driving his car, cutting grass, tending his garden and going to breakfast each day at Vandy's. He truly lived a full, abundant life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Meeks, for whom he provided loving care for many years.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Linda Meeks of Milledgeville and Dr. Waldo and Kay Meeks of Statesboro; two grandchildren, Allen Meeks of Milledgeville and Keith Meeks with the U.S. Army; three great-grandchildren, Josh, Cody, and Jayden Meeks; two sisters Louise May of Statesboro and Gertrude Hendrix of Portal; a special sister-in-law, Nellie Meeks; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks by the family is extended to Jane Dekle, Bob Miller and Wayne Miller for the care and love they have extended to Mr. Meeks as caregivers.

The funeral celebration for Mr. Meeks will be held Wednesday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. H. William Perry officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
