He attended Donaldson Military Academy 1861-1862 in Fayetteville and entered Virginia Military Institute where he fought with his corps of cadets at the Battle of New Market. In 1864, the corp was disbanded and he entered into the Confederate Army as an Adjutant of the 66th NC Troops. He attended the University of NC at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1867 as the salutatory of his class. Mr. Rose obtained his license to practice law and moved back to Fayetteville.
In Dec 1869 he married Augusuta Jane Steele. Their children were John, George, Charles, Augusutus, Thomas, Mrs. BA Morgan and Mary.

He practiced his profession in Fayetteville, being general council for the Old Cape Fear and Yadkin RR and later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad with his son to follow him as a partner, Charles G. Rose, Sr.
