Edgar Allan Crooks was the fifth child (4th surviving child) of Henry Crooks and Mary E. Hoyt. He was born on 24 Oct 1876, according to his WW I draft card, in Carson, Pottawattamie Co., IA, according to his son’s birth certificate.

He first appears by name in the 1880 Census, taken in Macedonia, Pottawattamie Co., IA. Edgar Crooks, a 3 year old, born IA was living with his parents, Henry Crooks, 32, born OH, and Mary Crooks, 31, born ME, and his siblings, Chas. Crooks, 11, born IA; Alice Crooks, 9, born IA; Arthur Crooks, 7, born IA; Clide (sic) Crooks, 6, born IA; Wm. Crooks, 2, born IA; and uncle Chas. Crooks, 18, born IA. His father was a carpenter. His mother was keeping house.

When the 1885 Iowa Census was taken in Linden, Dallas Co., IA, Ned Crooks, 8, born Pottawattamie Co., IA, was living with his parents, Henry Crooks, 38, born OH, and Mary Crooks, 36, born ME, and his siblings, Charley Crooks, 15, born Guthrie Co., IA; Allice Crooks, 14, born Pottawattamie Co., IA; Clyde Crooks, 10, born Pottawattamie Co., IA; Willie Crooks, 6, born Pottawattamie Co., IA; Dick Crooks, 1, born Dallas Co., IA. His father was a carpenter. His mother was keeping house.
NOTE: this is the only record where he was recorded using his nickname, “Ned.”

Edgar's father died between 1885 and 1895. No FaG memorial has been yet found (as of Jan 2021).

Between 1885 and 1995, Edgar moved to Spokane, WA, as he is listed with his parents in 1885, but absent from his widowed mother's household in 1895. There, on 10 Oct 1906, he applied for a license to marry Amelia Iverson. He was 29, residing in Spokane, and employed as a train dispatcher. The marriage was solemnized on 10 Oct 1906 in Spokane by Henry I. Rasmus, minister, 1st M.E. Church.

Edgar and Amelia were residing in Pasco, Franklin Co., WA, in 1910. Edgar was 33, Amelia T. Crooks, born MN, was 30. They had two children by this time, James E. Crooks, 2, born WA, and Robert G. Crooks, 1, born WA. Edgar was a railroad dispatcher.

The family moved to Boise, ID in 1914, according to Amelia’s obituary.

Edgar registered for the WW I draft on 12 Sep 1918, at the Local Board for Boise City, ID. He was 42, born 24 Oct 1876. He was described as tall, with a medium build, gray eyes, and light hair. He had no disabilities. He was residing at 1002 North 19th St., Boise. He was employed as a general agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., based in Milwaukee, WI. His contact was his wife, Amelia Crooks at the home address. They resided at this same address at least through 1940.

When the 1920 Census was taken, Edgar, Amelia, James E., and Robert G. had been joined by Clyde A. Crooks, 5, born WA, and Mary A. Crooks, 3, born ID. Edgar was a life insurance agent. James and Robert attended school. They owned their home and had a mortgage. Amelia’s parents were born in Norway.

In 1930, Edgar A. Crooks was 53. He was a life and accident insurance agent. Amelia was 49. James E. Crooks, 22, was an insurance salesman. Robert, 20, Clyde, 15, and Mary Alice, 13, attended school. They owned their home valued at $5,000. Edgar was 30 when married, Amelia was 26.

When the 1940 Census was taken the family was still living at 1002 N. 19th, Boise, Ada Co., ID: Edgar was a general agent for a life insurance company. James Edgar Crooks was a life insurance company cashier. Clyde Allan Crooks was a bookkeeper. They owned their home valued at $5,000, and had lived in the same house in 1935. Edgar and Amelia had 4 years of high school. James had 4 years of college. Clyde had 2 years of college. Mary had left home, attended Whitman College in Spokane, graduating in 1938, and married Arvid Wayne Anderson in Aug 1940, in Boise.
