Albert Cornelius Chittenden was the sixth of nine children born to Edward Thomas Chittenden and Ida Jane (Bigelow) Chittenden. He was named in honor of his uncle, who was, in turn, named for his uncle, the brother of Albert's great-grandfather, James Porter Chittenden. The progenitors of bothe the Chittenden and Bigelow families immigrated to the American colonies in the early 1600s.
Albert, although 36 years old and married, enlisted in World War II on 11 September 1943. He served in Company C of the 347th Engineers.
