Irene Margaret Chittenden Owens was the eighth of nine children born to Edward Thomas Chittenden and Ida Jane Bigelow Chittenden. The progenitors of both the Chittenden and Bigelow families immigrated to the American colonies in the early 1600s, and both of Irene's great-grandfathers, James Porter Chittenden and Thomas Allen Bigelow moved their families to California in the late 1850s.
