This is my tobacco chewing great grandmother. When I was just a boy, about 8 to 10 years of age my parents drove from New Mexico to San Diego, California. In the car in the back seat with me was my great grandmother Annie Eliza Thornton Elliott. We were taking her to see her daughter, Mable who lived in San Diego, California.

All the way Annie would chew her tobacco wad and then spit the juices into a can she kept near her. It made quite an impression on me and I have never forgotton the smell of a tobacco juice can. She seemed quite old to me (78) and kind of a stern expression on her face. She was short and stocky as I remember. We have pictures of her standing with the family in San Diego, California and all my Stofer cousins.

In 1872, the Thornton families moved near Nevada, Collin Co., TX to a farm they had rented from a Mr. Davies. The children attended school at Nevada. James Gordon Thornton, brother to Eliza, was called Jim and Martha Jane Thornton Wright, her sister was called Mattie or Matt. Martha was married to Samuel William Isaac Wright. These families farmed together.
