She passed away on September 24, 2010 in her home in Cedar City, UT at the age of 71.
Karen is survived by her loving husband, Dave Berry, of Cedar City; daughter, Robyn Holyoak (Leon) of Trabuco Canyon, CA; sons: David Berry, of Las Vegas, NV, Morris Berry (Kim), of Cedar City, and Chris Berry (Angie), of West Jordan; 12 grandchildren: Lauren Berry, Allie Berry, Chad Berry, Sydney Berry, Noah Berry, Ciara Berry, Justin Holyoak, Jared Berry, Grace Berry, Emma Berry and Natalie Berry; brothers: John Oldroyd (Carol), of Laguna Hills, CA, and Mike Oldroyd, of West Jordan; and sisters: Joan Smith, of Sandy, and Sue Izant (Dave), of Saratoga Springs.
She is preceded in death by her sister, Karol Frei; and grandson, Jesse Berry.
Karen was a graduate of Cedar City High School, Class of 1957 and a graduate of Cypress College, where she earned an Associate of Arts Degree. In high school Karen received honors for her outstanding achievements in Language Arts. She was also a contestant for Miss Iron County, Utah.
After spending many wonderful years in California, Karen and Dave moved back to Utah. For several years, Karen held the position as City Recorder for the City of Ivins, UT before returning to Cedar City in 2002.
Besides raising four children and being a vital part of all of her grandchildren's lives, she will also be remembered for her incredible contributions to church, community and friends. She was extremely intelligent and a very accomplished woman and was well known to all as a gourmet cook for her fantastic and adventurous cooking flair.
Her other many talents included accomplished seamstress, quilter, avid reader, actress, polished speaker, writer, stained glass artist, Theater Mom, Baseball Mom, Band Mom and Soccer Mom.
Karen was a patron of the Arts and directed numerous plays at high schools, colleges and church organizations. She was able to travel the country and the world, including Georgia, England, France, Latvia and Ireland, where she even climbed out on a ledge upside down to kiss the famous Blarney Stone.
Over the years she has served our Heavenly Father diligently and held many positions and roles in the LDS Church, including President of Relief Society and Primary, counselor in various organizations, Scout Leader, superb teacher, both for public schools and church assignments and twice as a Bishop's wife.
Karen was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, teacher and friend, and will be missed by all.
A viewing will be held Thursday, September 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 N 300 W, Cedar City, UT. Services to celebrate her life will be held Friday, October 1, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. with a viewing beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Cobble Creek Ward Church Building, 2015 Wedgewood Ln., Cedar City, UT.
Interment immediately following at the Cedar City Cemetery, all under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
