Margaret Thompson was born Jan. 5, 1812 in Monroe County, VA (now WV).
She was the sixth child, a daughter of James and Mary Thompson. In 1823 at age 11 she moved with her parents, brothers and sisters to a homestead near Richland, Rush County, IN. In 1841 she was listed as an heir in the probate court records for her father's estate.
On March 22, 1832 Margaret Thompson married Augustus Simmons in Rush County, IN.
Augustus and Margaret acquired land in Shelby County next door to Charles Thompson, her brother.
On June 7, 1834 their oldest son, Joab Simmons was born, then in September of 1836 James Simmons was born.
On Sept. 10, 1838 Charles Simmons and on Oct. 14, 1840, Frances Margaret Simmons was born.
