William Riley Combest was born in Kentucky July 8, 1832 to James Combest (1804-1866) and Nancy Bowmer (1812-1851). He married Martha Jane Whitehouse. They had a daughter named Mona May born 1876 in Montana;a son named Morgan Spencer Combest born 13 August 1878 in Montana and died 10 May 1927 in Lake County; and another son, George Allen Combest born 11 January 1880, Montana, and died 28 November 1952 in Lake County.
He was a prospector for a while. He left Illinois for California in 1854 at the age of 21.
