Joseph Latta Callery, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Callery of Duncombe, Iowa was born January 15, 1899.

Early in the war this lad of eighteen heard the call of his country and responded on April 12, 1917, when he entered the Great Lakes Navel Training Station in Illinois. There he took up training with the Hospital Corps with rank of Hospital Apprentice, 2nd class. Promotion later raised his rating to 1st Class and he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Chelsea, Mass.

Here he contracted influenza and when convalescent was sent home where he died six weeks afterward from heart weakness in the hospital at Webster City, Iowa, November 20, 1917.
