Ferdinand Lustwerk, Engineer and Entrepreneur, died of kidney failure in Chelmsford, September 20, 2010 at the age of 89. An immigrant from Estonia, he attended Boston Latin School and later graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Gas Turbine Laboratory at MIT and worked there for nearly 10 years, until striking out with Ernest Neumann to found Lytron, a purveyor of custom heat exchange solutions, now a multi-million dollar company in Woburn, MA. Mr. Lustwerk was the chief mechanical engineer at Lytron until his 63rd year, when he left to start a new company, Tark Engineering, which manufactured pumps for CT scanners and X-ray machines. He sold Tark Engineering in 2000, but continued to work as a consultant with its successor, Tark, Inc., until he was 84, when he finally retired and joined his second wife in San Mateo, CA. He returned to the Boston area after her death in 2009. His wife of nearly 50 years, Theodora Fischer Lustwerk, predeceased him, as did his second wife, Frances Brown. He is survived by his brother, and his daughter. Also grieving his passing are his second wife's sons and their families, as well as many people who were lucky enough to work with "Ferdy". His generosity and sense of humor will be missed.
