Lived most of his adult life in Iowa and worked for the Bridge and Ironworks Company. Also lived for a time in Putnam, Missouri.

In 1930 Proffit was working as an attendant in the Indiana Eastern Hospital for the Insane in Wayne County, Indiana. He was married to Stella Hobbs at the time.

Two articles in the Evansville Courier June and July 1940:

On June 21, 1940 in Birdseye, Dubois County, Indiana, Profit shot and killed Herman Gerking in self-defense, over an argument about furniture that Profit and his wife purchased from the Gerkings after Mrs. Gerking separated from Mr. Gerking and sold the household furniture. After 6 months, Herman Gerking came to the Sigler house, physically assaulted Profit's wife, and demanded that the Siglers return the furniture or he would kill them. Herman Gerking was drunk at the time. The Siglers were also living in the former Gerking residence in Birdseye.

It was declared by the coroner that the slaying was justifiable homicide and Sigler was released.
