Lawyer Dies Here at 74; Rites Today

Funeral services for Sumter Cousin, 74, a preeminent local attorney, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in St. Theresa's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard J. Lombard, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Mr. Cousin died Thursday morning in M. D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Tex., after a lengthy illness. He resided at 2960 Curtis Lane.

A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mr. Cousin was a member of the Shreveport, Louisiana and American Bar Associations and the Shreveport Country Club.

Born in New Iberia, Mr. Cousin was a captain in the Army and served with the American Expeditionary Force two years in France. He began law practice in New Iberia in the office of Edwin S. Broussard, who later became a U.S. Senator.

He entered partnership here with Tinsley Gilmer, a former faculty member of Tulane Law School. In 1921 he joined the law firm of Thigpen, Herold and Cousin. An avid sportsman, he served in the state Wild Life and Fisheries Commission. Selected in 1960 for membership in the Order of the Coif, an honorary law organization, he also was a member of Phi Delta Phi honorary law fraternity and Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Mr. Cousin received his B.A. degree from Tulane University in 1915 and his law degree in 1917, and was admitted to the bar that year.

Survivors are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Parks, Scarsdale, N.Y., Mrs. Paul McGill, Opa-locka, Fla., Mrs. Ted Rains, Wheat Ridge, Colo., Mrs. Jay McLaughton, Shreveport; two sons, Sumter Cousin Jr., Lafayette, and George Cousin, Shreveport; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Simon Herold, Gabriel Frere, William Comegys, Bill Josey, Robert Kilgore and Dr. Frank Jackson.
