Roland G. VerVelde, of Oostburg, died on Monday morning, September 13, 2010 at the Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.
Roland was born on February 23, 1928, in Oostburg, the son of the late William and Ella (Meinen) VerVelde. Roland graduated from Oostburg High School in 1946.
He served with the US Navy Seabees from 1946-48.
On June 9, 1950, Roland married Alice June DePagter in the Town of Holland.
Roland worked at Berkens Beeline until 1961 and then owned and operated VerVelde Alignment in Oostburg for over 40 years before his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg and served as an usher. He enjoyed raising turtles, doing yard work, and enjoyed going for coffee with his friends at the Knotty Pine and Subway. He and Alice June attended most of the Oostburg High School girls and boys basketballs games for the past 35 years.
Roland is survived by his wife, Alice June of Oostburg; one daughter, Gail (Bob) Larson of Elberton, GA; one son, Jerry VerVelde of Oostburg; two grandsons, Vincent and James Freer; two sisters, Wilma (Lewis) Veldboom of Oostburg, Eleanor (David) Wingert of Sheboygan Falls; and one brother, Gerald (Betty) Veldboom of Sheboygan Falls; and a special Navy buddy, Gail (Margie) Morrill of Denver, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ella VerVelde; step-father, John Veldboom; an infant granddaughter, Tambria Fischer; an infant brother; and his parents-in-law, Arnold DePagter and Alice (Kleinhesselink) DePagter (Dennis) Koskamp.
Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Thursday, September 16, 2010 with the Rev. Dr. Les Kuiper officiating.
Burial and military honors will follow at the Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland.
