Daughter of Rachel Lee Bedunnah and Jacob Wood, born in Aurora, Dearborn, Indiana in 1867. Irene met and later married Allen Betsworth on 28 September, 1890, at Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa, where his family lived, and where she resided with the Wilson family at the time. Her parents died in the decade after the Civil War, first her father, then her mother remarried to Samuel Lyons in Dearborn County in 1876.

The couple migrated to Little Robe Township, Dewey County, Oklahoma, and were there for several decades, raising their family together on a farm which was adjacent to two neighborhoods: Munice and Fountain.

Later, Irene moved to Canton, just east of Dewey County in Blaine.

Irene also took in three children of her nephew and raised them as her own, in the 1920's.

She was survived by her two sons: Leo Betsworth of Hugoton, Kansas, and Harris Betsworth of Wichita, as well as by her daughters: Mrs Jessie Winn and Miss Florence Wood of Oklahoma City. Her son Verne Betsworth and her daughter Elvira Betsworth Carter predeceased their mother.

Elva Carter is buried not far from her mother.
