Roscoe P. Baker, a Haxtun resident since the spring of 1916, passed away Sunday at the local hospital. He had resided at the Haxtun Nursing Home prior to being admitted to the hospital last week.
Mr. Baker lived on a farm when he first came to this community, later moving into town. He served as a clerk of the Town of Haxtun from 1938 until his retirement in 1956.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at two o'clock from the Church of the Brethren with Rev. Russell Kiester in charge.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Wilber Atkins, organist, and Miss Betty Sullivan, soloist. Sons sung were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer".
Bearers were Ernie Stryker, George I. McCulloch, H.L. Hofmeister, Merl Switzer, Veylerd Baker and Chuch Edwards.
Honorary bearers were Fred Portenier, Louis Koch, Frank Bjorklun, Merton Gordon, Ira Pierce and Clarence Kipp. Marvin Switzer was the usher.
The following obituary was read:
"Roscoe Perry Baker was born in Liberty, Mo. (sic. - IL) Nov. 23, 1888, the son of William F. and Lavina Johnson Baker.
He moved as a child to Kansas where he attended school. As a young man he moved to Bellville, Kan. where he taught school in that area.
He was married to Nellie O. Kinzie on Sept. 9, 1914 at Bellville. They moved to Haxtun in the spring of 1916 to a farm east of town. He started work May 1, 1938 as town clerk in Haxtun and retired in 1956.
He was a member of the Haxtun Cemetery Board for many years and also a long-time member of The Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie; two daughters Mrs. Raymond (Doris ) Baker of Haxtun and Mrs. Norris (Jeanne) Carsten, of Mesa, Ariz; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Warren (Avela)(sic - Luella) Gish of McPherson, Kan., Mrs. Lee (Mary) Bamford of Wenatchee, Wash., Mrs. Lawrence (Vera) Dooley of Bellville, Kan.; three brothers, Lawrence L. Baker of Chicago, Ill, Ted Baker of Wenatchee, Wash. and Harold Baker of LaVern, Calif. Also numerous nieces and nephews."
Concluding service and burial was at the Haxtun cemetery with the Thompson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Haxtun - Funeral services for Roscoe P. Baker, 81, longtime town official in Haxtun, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Brethren.
Mr. Baker died Sunday in a Haxtun hospital. The family home is at 213 N. Logan.
He moved to a farm east of Haxtun with his wife in 1916 and in 1938 started his first term as town clerk. He retired in 1956.
Mr. Baker was born November 23, 1888 in Columbus, Ill. and later moved with his parents to Kansas. He was married to Nellie Kinzie in Belleville, Kan. on Sept. 9, 1914.
He was a member of the Church of the Brethren and was a longtime member of the Haxtun Cemetery Board.
Among survivors are his wife Nellie Baker of Haxtun; two daughters, Mrs. Doris Baker or Haxtun and Mrs. Norris Carsten of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters and three brothers living in Kansas, Washington, Illinois and California; four grandchildren and one great grand child.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Merlin.
Burial will be in Haxtun Cemetery.
