Civil War Union Brigadier General. When the Civil War erupted, he organized a company in the 11th U.S. Infantry and was appointed Captain. After serving in the campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, he was promoted Colonel in command of the regiment in October 1861. In 1862, he commanded a brigade of the IX Corps, during the campaigns at South Mountain, Antietam and Maryland. He was promoted to Brigadier General in March 1863 and sent westward to Kentucky with the IX Corps, then on to Mississippi. During the Siege of Vicksburg, he contracted malaria fever, which forced him to leave the field and claimed his life.
