Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, New York Governor Edwin Denison Morgan appointed him Colonel in command of the 43rd New York Infantry. Vinton's 43rd New York was assigned to the Army of the Potomac, participated in the siege of Yorktown and at the Seven Days' Battles. Promoted Brigadier General in July 1862, he took part in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and the Chancellorsville Campaign. He commanded the 43rd New York at Gettysburg in 1863, the Wilderness Campaign and in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. In April 1865, he was in the final Battle of Sailor's Creek and was present at the surrender of General Lee's Army at Appomattox. After station duty at Danville, Virginia, he was honorably discharged and mustered out in June, 1865.
