Services for 22-year-old drowning victim today

Funeral services for Lester Leroy Asbury, 22, of Gridley, who drowned in a boating accident at the Thermalito Afterbay a week ago Sunday, will be held at the Block Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. today.

His body was recovered by Butte County Search and Rescue Squad shortly after it had been spotted floating about 300 feet from the outlet spillway on the Afterbay by a California Highway Patrolman shortly after 8:00 a.m. Sunday.

The search for Asbury had continued since he reportedly was thrown from a boat while waterskiing with two friends from Biggs at about 1:00 p.m. August 20. His companions, Lee W. Jared and Richard T. Slater told sheriffs deputies the boat was in a tight turn when the young man was flipped out.

A native of Gridley, born here May, 2 1950, he was a 1968 graduate of Gridley Union High School. He had served in the U.S. Navy and had seen duty in Vietnam. He had been employed as a deliveryman at Dowd's Furniture of Live Oak.

Surviving are his widow, Beverly Jean, and his parents, Cameron C. and Clara of Gridley; five sisters, Bertha Moore of Arboga, Loretta Heath and Carol Matt, both of Oroville, Dolly Arquette of Needles and Alice Rush of Santa Ana; and three brothers, Cameron Jr. of Pleasant Grove, Joe of Needles and Jerry, address unknown.

The Rev. Lloyd Johnson of the Gridley Assembly of God will officiate at the services. Soloist Merrill Womach, who will be accompanied at the organ by Norma Sanberg, will sing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Casket bearers will be Frank Cadek, Jr., David Cadek, Cameron J. Asbury, Chris Moore, Glen Moore, Leroy Turner, Rick Slater and James Williams.

Interment will be in the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.
