Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in New York, he graduated from West Point in 1838 and was commissioned an officer in the 2nd Infantry. With the start of the Civil War, he became quartermaster with the rank of Major and was stationed at St. Louis, attached to the staff of General John C. Fremont. In September 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General with the combined duties of provost-marshal and quartermaster of the Department of the West. Accused of being dishonest as quartermaster, he was arrested and the charges were dismissed with his resignation in January 1863. After the war, he became a stockbroker in New York City.
