Union Civil War Brigadier General. Born at Fulton, New York, he was a justice on the Kansas Supreme Court when the Civil War began. Commissioned as a Major in the 7th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry in October 1861, he took part in the Battle of Corinth and was promoted Colonel. In November 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General Chief-of-Staff to the XIII Corps assigned to the Vicksburg Campaign. As commander of the 9th Division's 1st Brigade during the assault on Vicksburg, he was wounded in the head and turned over command of the brigade. After recovering from wounds, he was placed in command of the Cavalry Division in August 1864 and led the cavalry forces during the Red River Campaign. He resigned from the Army on May 4 1865.
