Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Ghent, New York, at the start of the Civil War, he was a framer when he enlisted as a Private in the Union Army. Serving in a company of the 30th New York Infantry, he was appointed a Captain in June 1, 1861. Rising through the ranks, he became a Major in March 1862, a Lieutenant Colonel in August 1863 and Colonel of the 2nd New York Cavalry on December 13, 1863. He was in actions at the Battles of the Second Bull Run, Antietam and Chancellorsville. Promoted Brigadier, he was stationed at Washington D. C. during the winter of (1863-64), before commanding a brigade in the final Southern Campaigns in 1865. Before he was mustered out, he was military governor of the District of Northern Alabama. For his distinguished war service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and was one of only four men who rose from Private to Major General during the Civil War. After the war he resumed farming in Kinderhook, New York, until his death at age 67.
