Virgil was born and raised in the beautiful farm country of Morris County, New Jersey. He was the son of Stephen I. Howell and Ann Davenport. He served his nation well giving his life while trying to preserve the Union. He married before leaving for the army however to our knowledge he had no children.

Virgil Howell was a Private and served in the New Jersey Volunteers, Company C, Fifteenth Regiment.

Virgil enlisted on July 22, 1862 and was mustered in on August 25, 1862 for 3 Yrs
Tragically Virgil died of typhoid fever at Camp near White Oak Church, Va., Dec. 20, 1862

(5568) Howell, Virgil Private. Co.C, 15 NJ. Enlisted 22 July, 1862. Mustered in 25 Aug., 1862 for three years. Died 19/20 Dec., 1862 of Typhoid Fever at camp near White Oak Church (SR). Originally buried at Randall's Farm, Stafford (ROH).

Civil War Burials Fredericksburg, Virginia page 68 lists him as Inf., grave 5568.

Virgil was one of several family members who served in the Civil War - sadly he never came home to his family in the rolling farm lands that his father owned in Morris County, New Jersey or to his congregation at Chester Congregational Church.
