Solomon's parents have been an unsolvable mystery. It has been argued that he was a son of Johann Jacob Bortz and Elizabeth Wertz or of Johann Adam Bortz (1764-1842) and Anna Wittmeier (15 Jul 1765 - bef 1840?). Both Johann Jacob and Johann Adam were brothers - sons of George Adam and Maria Barbara Reith Bortz.

There were two Nathan Bortzes born in 1822 who are often confused in genealogical records.
One was a grandson of Johann Jacob (above) by his son Johann George and Lydia Heimbach.
The other was a son of Solomon Heimbach and Anna Maria Hoffman. This could be the clue that Solomon was also a son of Johann Jacob and Elisabetha Wertz.

Known children of Johann Adam and Anna were Maria Magdalena Bortz Keinert (Solomon) [19 Feb 1789 - 11 Aug 1869], David (27 May 1790 - 1854), Maria Margaretha Bortz [2 Dec 1791 - ?], and Daniel [13 May 1794 - 1872] married to Maria Heck . Their baptisms are recorded in Zionsville, PA as children of Johann A. and Anna /Hannah.
Anna Wittmeier daughter of Conrad and Elisabetha Wittmeier, was an older sister of Maria Magdalena Wittmeier who married Henrich Bortz (abt 1758) and was the mother of Lydia Bortz Kuhns (George).
