Lulu Richardson Stewart 1921 ~ 2010

Lulu Richardson Stewart, age 88, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt passed away at home 16 Sept. 2010 in the loving arms of her daughter and granddaughter in Naples, Utah.

She was born, Lulu Muriel Wilkins, December 21, 1921 in a log house on the banks of the White River just a few miles from Rangley, Colorado. Her parents were Albert Lovett Wilkins and Leafy Irwin Fletcher. Her father died when she was only six and Leafy later married Travis Moore, who continued to raise her.

After graduating from high school in Vernal, Utah, she married Raymond James Richardson on November 26, 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

After Ray died in 1973 she married Von B. Stewart. They enjoyed seven years together before his death in 1984.

Lulu was a passionate reader all her life until she lost her sight to macular degeneration. She taught all of her children to read before they started school. Mother also loved music and poetry. She remembered the lyrics and could sing almost every song she ever heard. Until the day she died she entertained us singing familiar tunes and reciting poetry.

Lulu expressed her artistic ability making hundreds of quilts. Her quilts won grand prize at the Utah State Fair several times. She also made wedding dresses for her daughters and others. Mother loved to travel driving through or flying to almost all the lower 48 states, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Europe.

She also worked on genealogy all of her life. Along with her sister Ruth they collected pictures as far back as possible. Mother's family has a very rich history. Sailing from Wales, the Wilkins were in Massachusetts in 1609, 11 years before the Mayflower landed, fighting in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. One of her other great-grandfathers fought in the early Indian wars, a friend of Daniel Boone.

After her children were older, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from Weber State University in 1976 as a Registered Nurse. She worked in the intensive care units at Primary Children's Hospital. Upon returning to Vernal she worked for Uintah County as a school nurse and in the WIC program.

Lulu is survived by her brothers, Pete (Marie) Moore and Vern (Toby) Moore; sister-in-law, Deeloris Jones; children, Terril Jean (Connie) Richardson, LueRae Burr, Dee Ann (David) Devenish, James Travis (Christine) Richardson, Debra (Lawrence) Johnson and Lynette (Richard) Clegg; 27 grandchildren; 48 great- and nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sisters, Ruth, Ruby and Helen; brothers, Lavell, Jean; granddaughter, Tira Jean; and son-in-law Butch Burr.

Lulu was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in Sunday School, Young Women, Cub Scouts and as Primary and Relief Society President and as a worker in the Vernal LDS Temple.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at the Naples Chapel, 2313 South Highway 40.
