He is believed to be the last known 'sin-eater' in England. Sin Eaters were generally poor people paid to eat bread and drink ale or wine over a corpse in the belief they would take on the sins of the deceased. The practice was frowned upon by the Church of England and the custom died out in the 19th Century. His grave has been restored by public subscription and a special service was held there on Sunday 19th September 2010.
Richard was 73.
