James was the son of Porter Graham and Susannah Bashford and was born in either Ross or Pickaway County, Ohio. By 1840 the family had relocated to Delaware County, Indiana. There, he married Elizabeth A Doughty on 22 Aug 1844. To this couple five children were born:

Luther William Graham, 1846-1918
Xenia Belle Graham, 1847-1933
Zacharia Taylor Graham, 1848-
Sarah Jane Graham, 1850-1915
Susan "Rose" Arazina Graham, 1852-1931

Prior to the birth of his last child, James abandoned his family in favor of the gold fields of California, settling for a time in Vacaville.

It is currently unknown when James left California or where he went from there. His name is listed in the 1895 Woods Co. Directory:
Graham, James M., entry #2167, SE/4 Section 8, Township 20 North, Range 9West. (Ames area)
