Born in 1846 to Thomas Boughey and Mary Dean Boughey, Thomas was born in Longton, Staffordshire and married Julia Ann Plant in 1866. Together they had 16 children, 15 of which lived well into adulthood. Thomas and Julia Ann made Derby their home, where he worked as a china potter. He was also very active in the Methodist Church, and several of his children became Methodist pastors.
