Helen M. Mahl (nee Smitek), 86, of Elyria, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at Grace Hospital in Amherst, following a long illness. Mrs. Mahl was born in North Ridgeville on May 13, 1921, and lived in Elyria for most of her life. She graduated from North Ridgeville High School in 1940. During WWII, she worked in the war factories. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the church's Altar and Rosary Society, the Twinettes, and she was a volunteer for the March of Dimes. Mrs. Mahl was a world traveler. Her travels included most major cities in the United States, Italy, Venezuela, Monaco, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, China, Thailand, England and Singapore. She played softball for Bittner Girls and they won several state championship games. She was an excellent seamstress and cook and she was very lucky in winning different contests. She is survived by her husband, Earl L. to whom she was married for 67 years; eight children, Dr. Thomas E. of Elyria, Patricia (Lawrence) Kamba of Chantilly, Va., Gerald (Judie) of Lafayette, Calif., Kenneth of Burlington, Vt., Theodore of San Francisco, Timothy (Cynthia) of Avon, Lawrence (Midori) of Tokyo, and Pamela (Mark) Plagens of Houston; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, John Smitek of Avon, James Smitek of Warrensville Heights, Edward Smitek of Elyria; and two sisters, Agnes Staveski of Amherst and Carolyn Forthofer of Elyria. Mrs. Mahl was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Smith and Veronica Diewald; two brothers, Frank and George Smitek; and her parents, Nikodem and Sophie (Mrocek) Smitek.
