D. A. Hiller Succumbs to Long Illness – Final Rites Today For VA Head Here
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday for Durell A. Hiller Sr., 57, manager of the Veterans Administration Center here, who died at 5 a.m. Saturday at the VA Hospital.
Mr. Hiller, who was in charge of both the hospital and the regional VA office, had been ill for approximately three months prior to his death.
A native of Calhoun City, Miss., Mr. Hiller was graduated from Mississippi State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and industry. He served as an infantryman during World War I and was an active member of the American Legion until illness overtook him.
A veteran of 34 years of service with the Veterans Administration, Mr. Hiller started out with the old Veterans Bureau in Washington, D.C., in 1921. He was employed in an office for vocational education of servicemen of World War I, the forerunner of the present-day Veterans Administration.
In 1923, he was transferred to New Orleans, where, after holding many other executive positions with the VA, he rose to the position of chief of vocational rehabilitation and education for the state of Louisiana.
In 1945, Mr. Hiller was transferred to the Dallas, Tex., office as assistant deputy administrator. When branch offices were eliminated in February, 1949, he became assistant manager at Dallas for the Southwest branch of the VA.
Following World War II, Mr. Hiller, together with a small group of experienced VA men, was given the task of putting the GI Bill of Rights into operation for some 1,000,000 veterans of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. He was serving in the Dallas office at the time.
Mr. Hiller came to Shreveport in 1949 to assume charge of all veterans affairs for North Louisiana upon the death of E. A. Speriky. Some 600 persons were employed under Mr. Hiller in the hospital and the regional office here.
Although he originally came to Shreveport to assume the managership of the VA regional office, he later was elevated to the post of manager of the VA center, which included the huge Veterans Hospital at Fort Humbug.
Mr. Hiller was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Noel Memorial Methodist Church, the 40 and 8 Club and the Shreveport Kiwanis Club. He and his family resided at 501 East Stoner.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Anna Lee Fox Hiller; two sons, Dr. D. A. Hiller Jr. of Shreveport and W. E. Hiller of Washington, D.C.; his mother, Mrs. J. J. Hiller of Calhoun City; two brothers, E. A. Hiller of Biloxi, Miss., and Ambrose Hiller of Calhoun City; three sisters, Mrs. Wallace McGahey, Miss Inez Hiller and Mrs. Martha Hiller, all of Calhoun City, and three grandchildren, D. A. III, Lawrence and Richard Hiller.
The rites will be held at Noel Memorial Methodist Church with the Rev. George Ross, assistant pastor, and Dr. F. M. Freeman, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery under the direction of the Osborn Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be George A. Welch, Dr. E. C. O'Brien, Dr. Allen H. King, Dr. C. E. Boyd, Eugene O. Foreman, Dr. Stewart W. Shinonek, Dr. Robert C. Ingram and George A. Huff.
