W. M. Bailey Rites Will Be Held Today
Funeral services for William Maurice "Bill" Bailey, 76, of 111 Patton St., will be held at 2 p.m. today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Murray Clayton, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Flanagan, H. Lewis Hodges, Billy Hanna, Al Mazur, Dr. J. L. Ewing, Jack Marshall, Sinclair Kouns and Herbert Dews.
Mr. Bailey died at 7 p.m. Monday at Schumpert Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Mr. Bailey, a Shreveport resident for 45 years, was a native of Aullsville, Mo. He was instrumental in forming Junior ROTC units in Shreveport high schools and in 1935 at a Baton Rouge convention presented the resolution favoring 12 years of public school. He coached American Legion baseball and elementary school football here for 33 years.
The present SPAR program evolved from a Junior Football and Baseball League of Shreveport founded by Mr. Bailey, Don Ewing and Walter N. "Buddy" O'Roark.
Mr. Bailey served as an Army pilot during World War I and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Lowe-McFarlane American Legion Post [14], and 40 and 8 Club, the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Home Builders Association and was a charter member of the Louisiana Home Builders Association. He was an owner of W. M. Bailey and Sons, Inc., and executive vice president of the Overhead Door Co. of Little Rock, Ark.
He was a past commander of Cedar Grove American Legion Post [6] and attended Little Rock College, where he received his B.L.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Virginia Birdsong Bailey of Shreveport; two sons, William Maurice Bailey Jr. of Shreveport, and Frank Bailey of Little Rock; three sisters, Mrs. D. H. Pace of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Louise Yancey of Ocean Park, Calif., and Mrs. R. H. Darst of Long Beach, Calif., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
