Officer Dan De Kraai was accidentally shot and killed following a training drill with other officers. Once the training had completed the officers reclaimed their service weapons with live ammunition.

As another officer was demonstrating something to Officer De Kraai, he was shot once in the back and suffered a fatal wound.

Officer De Kraai had served with the St. Joseph Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife Laura, and daughter, Lexie

Funeral

Funeral plans for the police officer killed in a training accident in St. Joseph on Wednesday have been released.

Family visitation for officer Dan De Kraai will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home in St. Joe. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Word of Life Church, 3902 N. Riverside Road, St. Joseph. A procession will follow the funeral at about 11:30 a.m.

Dan D. De Kraai, 35, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Heartland Regional Medical Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1975 in Iowa City, IA.
Dan attended and played football at both Ellsworth Community College, Iowa and Missouri Western State University. Dan graduated from the Missouri Western Law Enforcement Academy in 2005.
He married Laura Erickson in October of 2001.
Dan was a Patrolman with the St. Joseph Police Department. He served on the Special Response Team, was a Field Training Officer, a Crime Scene Technician and was an instructor at Missouri Western Law Enforcement Academy.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Tina Marie Vannice; aunt and uncle, Debra and Bill Gardner.
Dan was a member of The Edge Christian Fellowship and F.O.P Lodge #3.
He loved playing and watching football, especially the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he also loved shooting and was an excellent marksman. Dan will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
(Survivors:) wife, Laura De Kraai; daughter, Lexi De Kraai both of the home; father, Dennis De Kraai, Fort Madison, IA; brother, Dale De Kraai, Bloomfield, IA; sister, Crystal, De Kraai, Ottumwa, IA; grandparents, Dale and Deloris De Kraai, Ottumwa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services 10:30 A.M. Saturday, Word of Life Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
