From "The Whitney Family of Connecticut & Its Affiliations from 1649 to 1878" by Stephen Whitney Phoenix, 1878:

William Whitney was ". . . a black-smith; moved with his parents to Sharon, now Shelby, Ohio, reaching there on the day that he was one year old; went to Fairfield Co., Ohio, in the Winter of 1837, removing to Piketon, Ohio, in the next Spring, to Ross Co., Ohio, in the following Winter, and to Kingston, in Tippecanoe township, in Aug. 1838. They dwelt first in Kingston, Ohio; removed in 1844 to Middletown, Indiana; thence to Putnam County, and again to Tippecanoe County, Indiana; and settled 4 Oct. 1853 in Marion, Iowa, nine miles from Mount Pleasant, the county seat. They were living near Mount Pleasant in 1873 and he was engaged in the cultivation of his fine farm."
