Son of Ernst and Emma Fischer Knoll. he was born in Albert, Gillespie County, Texas. He was baptized 25 Jan 1925 in the Trinity Church in Stonewall, Texas. The family was listed on the 1930 US Federal Census for Pct 7, Gillespie County, Texas. The following children were listed on that census: Walter (18), Dora (17), Alma (14), Victor (10), Hilmar (7) and Ernest F (5).

By 1940, Hilmar and his younger brother Ernest were living with their mother and stepfather, Willie R and Emma Schumann in Gillespie County, Texas, along with his step brother, Willie Schumann, Jr (20).

Hilmar registered for the draft June 30, 1942, in Albert, Texas, and served in the United States Navy during World War II. His young brother Ernest F Knoll died in Belgium during the war.

On May 2, 1946, he married Clara Schaeferkaeter in Gillespie County. In 1947, they became the parents of a son, David.

Hilmar passed in 2002 and was buried in the Boerne Cemetery.
