Benjamin Franklin Haun was born in Santa Clara County, California (most likely the city of Santa Clara, rather than Gilroy, as his family was listed there in the 1860 census), on December 16, 1856 to Zimiriah "Zimry" Haun and Elizabeth Whistman. He was the grandson of Peter Haun and Jane Moody and John Wilson Whisman and Hannah Maria King - all early California pioneers. John Wilson Whisman ran the first stagecoach line in California and his wife Hannah was the grand-niece of the famous pioneer Daniel Boone through her maternal grandmother Hannah Boone Stewart, mother of Rachel Stewart King.

Benjamin married Missouri Frances Mann (1861-1947) in February of 1883 and had at least six children. They were 1. Estella Frances Haun (1883-1981); 2. Oscar Franklin Haun (1885-1941), husband of Kathryn R. Warford (1895-1984); 3. Ralph Cornelius Haun (1887-1967), husband of Anne McNamara; 4. Eva Belle Haun (1889-1974), wife of Clarence P. Farnsworth (1885-1967); 5. Emma May Haun (born 1901); and 6. Eunice Gertrude Haun (born 1894), wife of Walter Schuman. He had at least eight grandchildren.
