Sarah Mauser/Mouser was born in 1751 probably in North Carolina. She could have been the daughter of Hans Michael and Agnes (Gomminger) Mauser, both German immigrants, but this still hasn't been verified. In 1772 at the age of 20, Sarah married Nicholas Houk from Pennsylvania in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Sarah and Nicholas began their family there in 1774 with the birth of their first child Rebecca Mary "Polly" followed by a son Frederick in 1777. Sometime after Frederick's birth, Nicholas was drafted into the Continental Army, North Carolina Line. Life must have been difficult for Sarah during this period, raising two small children alone in a war-torn area. Sarah and Nicholas continued raising their family and had eight children altogether, but only five are known. Rebecca Mary "Polly" married Cooney Adams; Frederick married Elizabeth Reden; Elizabeth "Betsy" married Joseph Husbands; Sarah "Sally" married William Roberts; Catherine "Caty" married Richison Roberts. The other three children may have been George, Michael and Joseph but their connection to Sarah and Nicholas hasn't been established at this time. After 41 years of marriage, Sarah and Nicholas moved to Washington County, Kentucky in 1814 and then sold their 100 acre farm less than 5 years later on January 23, 1819. Along with their family, they moved back east to Rockcastle County, Kentucky where Sarah lived another 25 years. According to an affidavit given on September 11, 1845 by son-in-law Richison Roberts in Rockcastle County, "Sally (Sarah) departed this life in Rockcastle County the 1st day of April 1845" at the home of her youngest child, Catherine. She is buried next to her husband of 72 years in Renfro Valley's peaceful Hiatt Cemetery.
