Emilie was the daughter of Charles Lange and Unknown. She married August Johann Westphal in Germany in about 1856. They came to the United States in about 1864, first going to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then to Hennepin county in about 1866, settling in Corcoran. They moved to Traverse county in about 1881 until her death.

They had 13 children: Augusta Marie (Wulf-Ludwig), Edward Otto, William Johann, Martha E. (Mueller), Herman J., Gustavus Adophus, Ludwig Albert, Albert C., Lydia Charlotte (Green), Frederick Karl, Henry E., Wilhimine Henrietta (Lange), and Gilbert D.
