The son of Jacob & Mary (Winter) Mentzer, he married Louisa Harting February 27, 1853, and fathered Diller W. (b. 04/10/54), Missouri A. (b. 11/21/56 - married Jacob H. Burkholder), Sophia (b. 03/25/58 - married Franklin Stauffer), L. Anna (b. 02/26/60 - married Daniel G. Sheaffer), and Mary J. (b. 12/20/61 - married Clayton Schload). In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and is in the 1863-65 draft registration living there as well.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-two in Hinkletown, Lancaster County, September 12, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 27 as a private with Co. C, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865.

At the end of his life, he was living in an East Earl Township hotel owned by his son-in-law Franklin Stauffer where he was found dead in his bed, the cause surmised to have been apoplexy.
