Elzia moved to Rhodes with his family in 1922 and went to Rhodes school. He worked on the railroad and Maytag. He moved to Downey, California and trained to be a tool and die worker after he married Elinor. they later moved to Rockford, IL. He worked in a factory there for several years. Then the company sent him to Wytheville, Virginia to start another plant. He ran the plant at Wytheville and a restaurant which Elinor nicknamed the "greasy Spoon" until he retired.
