OBITUARY
Funeral services were set for Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Church of Christ here for Wilson Locke, 69, who died Saturday at Johnson Hospital. Leon Savage, local minister, was to officiate, Coffey Funeral Home having charge of interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Since suffering a stroke four weeks ago, Mr. Locke had been a patient in a Durant hospital., but had returned home, where he was reported as improving. He suffered a second stroke at noon Saturday and died at 5:30 pm.
He was born Feb 22, 1876, near the old water mill in the vicinity of Valliant. His father, the late Dr. Ben F. Locke, practiced medicine there after coming to Indian Territory from Tennessee in 1875.
After attending public schools, Locke attended Jones and old Spencer Academies before he married Miss Susan Hampton. They lived near Messer before coming to Hugo.
After having worked on the Navajo reservation near Gallup, NM, Locke took up wood carving as a hobby and for a time, under the WPA, had charge of wood carving classes in the project's recreational program here. His totem poles attracted wide attention. Locke was interested in Choctaw tribal affairs, was an ardent Democrat and belonged to the Masonic lodge here.
