LEST SHE BE FORGOTTEN:
THE STORY OF THE SHORT LIFE OF EDNA BLANCHARD (1910-1926)

In 1993, I was in the den of the home of my grandmother, Lela Mae Andrepont (nee~ Daigle). This was the house I grew up in. (My grandmother for all intents and purposes was my default mother, the woman who raised me since infancy.) In the distance, we heard the lonely whistle of a locomotive engine that was carried by the north wind on this cold May morning. I looked into my Ma-Ma's eyes and saw a tear stream down her face. Intuitively, she explained to me that whenever she heard the sound of a train whistle in the distance, it reminded her of her beautiful cousin, Edna Blanchard.

She told me the story of Edna, her older cousin she grew up with. She said that Edna fell ill when she was a young lady. From what she recalled; it was appendicitis. In those days (mid 1920's) there were no other options for her care since they were very poor - other than for Edna to go to Charity Hospital in New Orleans for treatment. Edna had to travel alone since the family had no funds available to travel with her. A few days later, Edna passed away.

The lonely sound of that train whistle in the distance. That is the sound that my grandmother remembers as the family waited at the depot for the arrival of Edna's body. Edna was laid to rest dressed in her wedding gown which had just completed for her wedding.

Rest in Peace, Edna Blanchard, now your story lives on in the annals of Les Memoirs, the annual publication of the Lafayette Genealogy society.
