Elizabeth Wright
Elizabeth Wright of Hood River died on June 28, 2003. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Anderson's Tribute Center at 2 p.m. with vault interment to follow at Mt. View Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 2, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Talitha Elizabeth Sturges was born in Eucha, Okla., on June 27, 1918, to James and Beatrice (Newman) Sturges. Jim died in December 1917. Beatrice later married Alan Justus Perkins.
In May 1929 they moved to Hood River to work on Milt Downing's apple ranch.
Elizabeth attended Central Vale School for four years, Odell High School for one year and Hood River High School for three years, graduating in May 1936.
Elizabeth joined the Valley Christian Church when she was 13 years old. She was baptized in the Hood River by the old Hood River bridge. Bonneville Dam hadn't been built yet, so the water was shallow. There were 23 lined up on the sandbar. They waded out into the water where B. Ross Evans baptized them.
In 1936 on Valentine's Day, Elizabeth met Eugene Wright from Berryville, Ark. They were married on Aug. 15, 1936, by B. Ross Evans of Valley Christian Church.
Gene always liked cows so as soon as they could, they bought a farm in the Barrett District. Gene and Elizabeth operated a dairy farm from 1941 to 1976.
Elizabeth worked seasonally in the packing house and cannery. She was a cook's assistant at Barrett School. She also bottled and delivered milk for the farm.
Elizabeth's many activities in the community included: PTA, 4-H Leader, Home Extension, Ladies' Aid at church and TOPS club.
Elizabeth loved her family. She was an only child and always wanted a large family. She succeeded and was a loyal supporter of all activities in which her children and grandchildren participated.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her grandson, Ray Gilkerson, in 1992 and her husband, Eugene Wright, in 1995.
Elizabeth is survived by three daughters: Barbara Jones and Kathy McNerney of Parkdale and Margaret Strasser of Hood River. She has nine surviving grandchildren: Scott and Greg Gilkerson; Joel, Jeff, and Kevin McNerney; Kristi Van Dooren, Ron and Jon Kurahara; and Nancy Rinella. Elizabeth has 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
