John L. Bumgarner, 80, of Norman, Oklahoma, died Monday, January 20, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman, Oklahoma with Reverend Cal Brannon officiating. Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Norman, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
Mr. Bumgarner was born January 29, 1922 in Norman, Oklahoma, to John Lee and Leona Stogner Bumgarner. He grew up in Norman and graduated from Norman High School. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors in History, later receiving a Masters in Education Administration also from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Bumgarner married Sadie Margaret Covington on February 15, 1946. During World War II, he served with the United States Army Air Force. He started teaching at Pleasant Grove Schools near Seminole, Oklahoma for one year and returned to Norman. Mr. Bumgarner served for a number of years as principal at McKinley Elementary and was principal for twelve years at West Jr. High. He then returned to McKinley and served as principal until his retirement in May 1982. He was a charter member of the Norman Sooner Lions. He was also a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association. Mr. Bumgarner was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman, serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kindergarten at McFarlin. Mr. Bumgarner loved playing golf and was an avid O.U. fan.
Mr. Bumgarner was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Betty Lou Chase and Helen Kammerlocher. Survivors include his wife, Sadie of the home; two daughters, Mary June Joseph and husband, Joe of Satellite Beach, FL and Linda Lippe and husband, Dennis of Austin, TX; one sister, Mary Ann Jahnke and husband, H.R. of Henderson, Nevada; two brothers, Robert Bumgarner and wife, Sharon of Phoenix, AZ and Phillip Bumgarner and wife, Cathey of Bradenton, FL; and four grandsons, Joseph Joseph III, Aaron John Lippe, Tyler Joseph Lippe and Calvin James Lippe.
The family has designated the music program at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd, Norman, Oklahoma 73069 as appropriate for expressions of sympathy.
