Civil War Union Army Officer. During the Civil War he served as 1st Lieutenant and commander of Battery C, 4th United States Regular Artillery. The son of Union Army Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas, he was killed with the rank of Captain on April 26, 1873 by Modoc Indians under Captain Jack at what is now Lava Beds National Monument in California. During this encounter General Edward R.S. Canby was also killed.
